Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Painter. Born in Brown County, OH on May 24, 1836.

After serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, Streight taught painting and drawing at the Chicago Female College. In the Midwest he was exclusively a portraitist, but due to his health, he moved to the milder climate of Denver in the early 1870s. In Colorado he was inspired by the Rockies and painted many scenes for the Kansas Pacific Railroad. Streight claimed to have painted by supernatural guidance and often held seances in his studio. A fast painter, while using the lively beat of a music box, he would go into a trance and dash off one of his large canvases in minutes. His mountain epics often include picturesque cloud formations and a glowing sunset. In 1891 he settled on a ranch near Mountain View, CA where he continued painting. He died nearby in San Jose on Oct. 20, 1912.

Exh: Industrial Exhibition (Chicago), 1873; New Orleans Expo, 1885; San Diego, 1895. In: Stanford Museum; Nat'l Gallery (London); Denver Public Library. AAW; Ben; Har; San Diego Evening Tribune, 122-1895; Mountain View Register, 10-25-1912 and N Y Times, 10-22-1912 (obits).
