| Iwakichi Shigematsu was born in Japan in 1886. Shigematsu immigrated to the Seattle, WA in 1905. By 1917 he was living in New York City where he was enrolled at the Art Students League while exhibiting with the Society of Independents. By 1920 he had arrived in Los Angeles and continued studying at the local Art Students League under Lawrence Murphy. Shigematsu was described as "a Japanese with oriental feeling and occidental ability." Returning to Japan, he joined the Futurist Art Ass’n and began working in Cubist, Futurist, and Expressionist styles.
