A painter of South African portraits and life, she was born in South Africa (1894) to German-Jewish immigrant farmers. Her colorful depictions of African life show a clear contrast to those of earlier colonial artists in their departure from stereotypical expressions of exotic curiosity. Her portraits, in some instances leaning toward the abstract, are strong expressions of the individual subjects.
Also known for still life paintings, drawings, and sculpture, Ms. Stern died in 1966.
