Born in Guilford, Connecticut, little is known about Isaac Sheffield
except that he was an itinerant Connecticut painter who worked in the
1830s and early 1840s. In 1838, he settled in the whaling center
of New London, and he died there in 1945.
Only five adult portraits including three miniatures are extant, and
four of the five are of sea captains holding telescopes with red drapes
for background and a ship in the distance. They are half-length,
face views, posed (showing 500 of 1115 characters). |
