This biography from the Archives of AskART:
John Barbey Stuppin attended the School of Fine Arts at Columbia University in New York and the San Francisco Art Institute, where he studied with Jay De Feo Sam Tchakalian and Bill Allan. Later, during the 1970s, he became a trustee of the Institute. In the late 50s he served to the rank of captain in the US Marines.

Stuppin often paints en plein air and frequently he uses the outdoor work as an inspiration for large studio pieces. He is noted for his colorful works depicting Sonoma County, California.

Beginning in 1988 and through the early 1990s he was part of an en plein air painting group informally known as the Sonoma Four, which included Tony King, William Morehouse and William Wheeler. In 1992 they toured the United States together, deliberately reversing the direction taken by American artists a century earlier, in order to record natural landscapes from all over the country.  The work from this trip was exhibited at the Century Association in New York, an institution noted for its collection of Hudson River School paintings.  In 1997, the Academy of Science Museum, San Francisco exhibited paintings by Stuppin, King, Wheeler and Jerrold Ballaine that had been executed on the Farallon Islands. Work executed in the 1880s on these islands by Albert Bierstadt was included in this show.

Jack Stuppin has exhibited nationally in many one man and group shows. In 1998 he had a one-man show at his Alma Mater, Columbia University’s School of Fine Arts. The Sonoma County Museum gave him a one-man show in 2002.

Essays and reviews about his work have been written by recognized critics and art historians including Kenneth Baker, John Fitz Gibbon, Peter Frank, Philip Linhares, Donald Kuspit, Miriam Roberts, Peter Selz, and Mark Van Proyen.

Paintings by Stuppin are in numerous private, corporate and institutional collections. Among the museums that hold his work are: the de Young Memorial Museum, San Francisco, CA; the Butler Museum of American Art, Youngstown, OH; Fine Arts Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christie, TX; Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe, NM; Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA; Oakland Museum of California, Oakland, CA; The Sonoma County Museum, Santa Rosa, CA; San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, CA; and, the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT. The United States Department of State regularly borrows his vibrant unique landscape paintings for the Art in Embassies Program. Four of his paintings are on loan to the National Endowment for the Arts (2006).
