Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Painter, muralist, lithographer. Born on Jan. 6, 1910 in Franklin, IN. Swiggett moved with his family to California in 1912. He studied at the Chouinard School of Art, Claremont Graduate School, San Diego State College (B.A.), and USC (M.F.A.). While on the Federal Art Project in the 1930s, he assisted Norman Chamberlain in the Huntington Park Post Office mural. He taught art at USC (1940-41), Washington State College (1941-42), and San Diego State College during 1946-77. Swiggett was active as an artist in San Diego until his demise on Dec. 8, 1990. His works are often humorous or imaginative, executed in such styles as Realism, Surrealism, or Realistic Fantasy. Member: La Jolla AA; SFAA; Laguna Beach AA. Exh: LACMA, 1935-41, 1946, 1950; SFAA, 1936-38; GGIE, 1939; San Diego Art Guild, 1948-90; Hoosier Salon, 1948-52; Arizona State Fair, 1950; Calif. State Fair, 1951 (award), 1952; LA Co. Fair, 1951 (award); Denver Museum, 1951, 1952; La Jolla Art Center, 1956, 1957; Scripps College, 1958; San Diego State University (retrospective). In: San Diego Museum; USC (murals); Polytechnic High School (Long Beach); U.S. Post Office (Franklin, IN). WWAA 1940-70; WWC 1942; Art of California, July 1990.
