| Painter. Born in Pleasant Valley, IL in 1861. Smith grew up on a farm and broke horses as a youth. In 1879 he began his western travels. He first went to Leadville, CO where the silver-mining boom was under way. After drifting around the West for a few years, he studied at the AIC and worked in Chicago as an comic illustrator for the Rambler. From there he moved to NYC where he was on the art staff for the Judge and Leslie's Weekly. On assignments for these publications he made regular forays in (showing 500 of 946 characters). |
