After his training as a font lithographer, the Swiss Johann Gottfried Steffan (1815-1905) moved to Munich in 1833.  He studied at the University of Polytechnic under Walter Romberg as well as at the Academy of Fine Arts under Christian Zimmermann, Peter Cornelius, Julius Hess, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Friedrich August von Kaulbach.

In his turn for realistic landscape painting, he was influenced by Carl Rottmann. Steffan's studio was a central (showing 500 of 730 characters).
