A student at the Massachusetts Normal School in Boston, John Stacey then moved to Chicago in 1891. He and his wife, Anna Lee Stacey, then opened a studio there in the Tree Studio building. He was a member of the Chicago Painters and Sculptors and exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago Annual Exhibitions.

Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Painter. Born on a farm in Bedford, Maine, on March 16, 1859.

Stacey studied at the Normal School in Boston and in Paris at Académie Julian under Boulanger and Lefebvre. He taught at the Kansas City Art School before moving to Chicago to teach at Crane College. To escape the severe winters in Chicago, he moved to Pasadena in the 1930s and remained there until his demise on Feb. 3, 1941.

Member: SWA; Painters & Sculptors of Chicago; Pasadena Society of Artists; Cliff Dwellers Club.

Exh: Louisiana Purchase Expo (St Louis), 1904 (medal); Buenos Aires Expo, 1910 (medal); AIC, 1911, 1924, 1928 (prizes); PPIE, 1915; Pasadena Society of Artists, 1938 (prize), Painter and Sculptors of Los Angeles, 1938.
