This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| John Steel grew up in New York City and did some acting and singing in Broadway productions as a child. During War World II he served in the Coast Guard and the Marine Corp. After the war he went to Art Center College in Los Angeles on the GI Bill.
He became well known in Southern California for his cover illustrations for "Skin Diver" magazine. He was a diver and underwater photographer. Steel also did some illustrations for Walt Disney books and contributed to conceptual drawings for Disneyland.
John Steel was an artist for Revell Model Kits and the signature artist of their "Picture Fleet."
