This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Goettingen, Germany on Sept. 29, 1889. Stoll showed artistic inclinations at an early age, and had some art training at Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. Most of his early life was spent as a sailor and, with an artist's eye, he acquainted himself with most all sailing vessels. He lived in South America for a few years before settling in San Francisco in 1915. The PPIE of that year awakened his yearnings to become an artist. Other than a brief period at the CSFA, he was a self-taught artist. In the early 1920s he began exhibiting in the San Francisco Bay area. He contributed six murals to the Court of Seven Seas on Treasure Island for the GGIE, 1939. Stoll was a resident of San Francisco until 1960 and then moved across the Golden Gate to Mill Valley where he remained until his demise on April 8, 1974. Primarily an etcher, his great love of the sea and its ships is the dominant theme in his artworks. Member: SFAA; Calif. Society of Etchers (pres. 1948-54). Exh: Calif. Society of Etchers, 1924-50 (awards); SFMA, 1941; Univ. of Nevada, 1943; Carnegie Inst., 1949; Madrid; Mexico; Caracas; Rome; Library of Congress, 1949. In: SFMA; CHS; CPLH; Mills College; SF Maritime Museum; Oakland Museum; Sailors Union of the Pacific (mural and granite monument); Buckingham Palace (London); Tel Aviv Museum.
