This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following, submitted April 2004, is from the artist.

Jordan Straker, a wood carver, began that pursuit 18 years ago when, as therapy for surgery to correct a partially paralyzed thumb, he picked up a Dremel tool. The rest, you could say, is woodcarving history.

His first carving, a bird, won a Best in Show Award at a British Columbia woodcarving show and competition, and to date, he has won 250 top awards including Collector's Choice for four consecutive years ('98, '99, '2000, 2001) at the Calgary Stampede's Western Art Auction. He is a five-time winner at both the Canadian Workshop Award and the Pacific Northwest Carving Championship. His work was named as the Artist's and Collector's Choice at the Alberta Art Essentials art show and sale as well as receiving at the latter event the Most Versatile Carver Award, and best in the Northwest.

Jordan's studio is at Abbotsford home where he works with his carvings to look and feel like leather, rubber, cloth and wool. His chaps, horse bridles and riding boots have fooled even the craftsmen of real leather products.

In his spare time, to clear his mind from the intense artist clutter that builds up during these long days, Jordan is a teacher of Irish and Canadian Step dancing.
