This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A painter of marine scenes including ships and of townscapes, especially churches, Joseph Smith was born in New York City and remained a life-long resident. One of his subjects, painted in 1824, was John Street Methodist Church in New York, and it was later published as a lithograph. He worked in partnership with his son, William S. Smith, and another son, Archibald Cary Smith, was a painter.

Joseph Smith exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association.
