| | Born in New Zealand on Sept. 27, 1889. Jo Sinel was apprenticed to a lithographer when quite young and remained a self-taught artist. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1917 and lived among the Indians in the Southwest and Montana where he "nearly married three or four squaws." He maintained a studio in NYC for a few years but by 1923 had moved to San Francisco. After building a cabin in the Sierra Nevada, he painted landscapes there before returning to the San Francisco Bay area in 1936. Maintaining a studio in San Francisco, he commuted to his home in Oakland until his death there on Jan. 27, 1975. Exh: CPLH, 1932; CCAC, 1970 (solo). | Source:
