Born in Upton, Massachusetts and graduated from Dartmouth College in
1780, Joseph Steward became a competent painter of portraits in New
England in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Among his
portrait subjects was The Reverend Eleazar Wheelock (1711-79), the first President of Dartmouth College (1769-79).
Before taking up painting, he had studied for the ministry, but ill
health caused him to change direction. By 1793, he was painting
portraits, and three (showing 500 of 1294 characters). |
