This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Joseph Stoddard of California paints watercolor sketches of streetscenes and architecture in Southern California. Stoddard's sketchbook contains pictures that capture moments, emotions and process. Stoddard often recreates sketches as large studio pictures, and he includes notes in the margin that note the time, place, sounds and weather during the painting.

As well as his gallery work, Stoddard paints series of paintings to be used as cards or to be published in books. His book credits include "Pasadena Sketchbook" published by the Historical Society of Southern California and Vroman's Bookstore, Pasadena.

Biography from Chemers Gallery:
Joseph Stoddard is a watercolor artist who specializes in landscapes, urban scenes and architectural subjects. His work captures the informality of a sketchbook and frequently contains tiny thumbnail drawings and comments written directly on the finished painting.

Never let reality stand in the way of a good painting. This has been Joseph's goal for the past twenty years as he has struggled with the challenging medium of watercolor. He wants people to get an emotional response from his paintings and sketches and to be charmed and surprised by his interpretation. He loves to work outside in the beautiful Southern California sunshine, trying to commit to paper the sensations he experiences, in order to offer that to you.

He was born in Highland Park, Illinois in 1954, and moved to Littleton, Colorado when he was three. He has two younger brothers, both of whom are in the design and art business. His mother was a schoolteacher and his father was a lieutenant and a pilot in the United States Navy.

In 1972 Joseph attended the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver, majoring in graphic design as well as taking watercolor paintings classes from Skip Whitcomb and Tom Berger. His early influences were Buffalo Kaplinski, Zoltan Zabo, Leroy Neiman, Christo, David Gentleman, Charles Reid, and Herb Ryman. He has studied with Robert E. Wood, Charles Reid and Marilyn Simandle.

Joseph moved to Southern California in 1974 and has worked in the field of graphic design, corporate identity and architectural graphics up to the present time. He is currently co-owner of SKA Design in South Pasadena specializing in developing signage and wayfinding projects.

Joseph has produced paintings for a number of Pasadena events, including the Bungalow Heaven Annual Tour, the Colorado Street Bridge Party, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, the California Art Club Artists for Architecture Painting Project, the Pasadena Symphony and the Pasadena Pops Orchestra.

His work has also been on the covers of a variety of publications including Pasadena Magazine, a book series published by the Historical Society of Southern California, and the Lost and Found Series by Many Moons Press. In 2001 a book of his sketches entitled Pasadena Sketchbook was published. The second edition was published in October of 2008. A collection of sketches of the University of Redlands entitled Redlands Sketchbook was published in 2007. Walter Foster Publishing published Expressive Color, a painting instruction book, in August of 2008.

As a popular demonstrator around Southern California, Joseph is a regular teacher at Holbein's Art Event in Vermont and the Learning and Product Expo in Pasadena, California.
