This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Joseph Whitla Stinson was born and raised in New York City, where he studied art and architecture, civil engineering and law at Columbia University. He also wrote poetry, spoke several languages, travelled extensively in Europe and studied art in Rome, Italy.

After returning to the US, in the interest of a financial regularity, he opted for utilizing his CU law degree in Washington, D.C.  He gained a position in the State Department as a lawyer in the Latin-American Division.

Stinson was a water colorist, known for small scale, swiftly executed en plein aire scenes of European and American locations.  He exhibited his works in museums in Washington, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia.
