Juan Jose Sicre was born in Matanzas, Cuba, in 1898 and was graduated from the Academy of San Alejandro in Havana. He was awarded a scholarship for study in Europe in 1919. He studied in Madrid at the Fine Arts School of San Fernando and in Paris under Antoine Bourdelle. He shared a studio in Florence, Italy and in Paris, France, with the Cuban painter Antonio Gattorno. He returned to Cuba in 1927.
