| | Born in Le Havre, France on April 20, 1846. Schoenmakers immigrated to New Orleans with her mother in 1849. At age six she crossed the Isthmus of Panama astride a donkey and sailed for San Francisco. A self-taught artist, she painted several portraits of family and friends as well as porcelain plates.
