Biography from Telfair Museum of Art:
Artist Julian Russell Story, youngest child of American neoclassical sculptor and poet William Wetmore Story, was born in 1857 in Walton-on-Thames, England, and spent much of his life abroad. He grew up in Rome, surrounded by the literary and artistic elite who admired his father.

Julian Story received his formal education at Eton and Brasenose College, Oxford University, England. Upon graduation in 1879, he began his art studies with American artist Frank Duveneck, who was then residing in Venice. There, in 1881, Story launched what would be a long and successful career in portraiture by painting the likeness of renowned poet Robert Browning, a friend of his father’s.

Story later moved to Paris where he studied with French masters Henri Gervex and Ferdinand Humbert and celebrated academic artist Jules Lefebvre at the Académie Julian. In Paris he continued to produce portraits as well as genre and history paintings, but it was as a portraitist that he was sought after by many celebrity clients, including King Edward VII. His portraiture may have been influenced by the work of his friend John Singer Sargent, who, like Story, spent much of his life abroad.

After his marriage to American opera singer Emma Eames in 1891, Story purchased a villa in Italy and spent subsequent years traveling between Europe and the United States. In 1902 the Storys settled in Philadelphia but continued to travel widely, typically summering in Italy.

Story exhibited regularly in the Paris Salons from the early 1880s through the turn of the century, and was awarded an honorable mention at the 1887 Salon. He received a gold medal at Berlin in 1891, and silver medals at the Paris Expositions of 1890 and 1900 and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. The artist also contributed three works to the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, including a monumental history painting based on an episode from the French Revolution (first exhibited at the 1887 Paris Salon) and two portraits – one of his father and another of his wife Emma. He was made a chevalier in the French Legion of Honor in 1900, and an associate of the National Academy of Design, New York, in 1906.
