This biography from the Archives of AskART:
From New York City, Kate Shepherd is known for her minimalist, abstract paintings, miniature drawings, wax sculptures, and for site-specific installations.  Many of her paintings are diptychs with strongly delineated dividing seams, and "the linear elements sometimes run slightly askew as they move from panel to panel." (King)  In some of her exhibitions, she has created small drawings on paint chips including birds, butterflies, and the movie character E.T.

She trained at the New York Academy of Art, earning an Master's Certificate in 1996; the School of Visual Arts, M.F.A. in 1992; and in 1990 at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.  Shepherd earned her BFA at Oberlin College in 1989.

Residencies include the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas in 1995; and the MacDowell Colony in 1993, 1994 and 1998.  She inaugurated the Lannan Foundation's Artist-in-Residence program in Santa Fe, and while there had an exhibition at the facility of her geometric oil paintings, wall paintings and screenprints.  Of her wall painting, "a large white rectangle superimposed on the cream-colored walls of the entrance hall", it was written that it "reverberated like a shard of sunlight streaming through a windowpane.  This piece was a powerful precursor to the exercises in luminosity and color to be seen inside." (King)
