Smalley's home town was Waverly, Iowa and she went to Chicago to study
in its Art Institute during 1884-1885. Charles Corwin there
supervised and criticized her work in life studies and
portraiture. Under Corwin, Miss Smalley had remarkable progress
and in 1885 won the Chicago Art Institute Medal for Drawing and
