This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Noted still-life and portrait artist, Lila Shelby spent her early years in north Louisiana and the New York City area, with the last 38 years lived in the Metairie-New Orleans area.

She attended the Arts Student League and Columbia University, and from her studio at 63rd Street and Broadway, she painted hundreds of portraits of military dignitaries, university presidents, bank officials and members of affluent families.

In an interview with the New Orleans Times-Picayune in 1991, she talked about the thousands of portraits she painted and the one closest to her heart. "It's the one I painted of Billy Graham back in 1951," she said. "There was something about him that touched my life in a very special way. I think it was his sweet, gentle ways and his love for people."

She retired from painting in 1991. She was featured in Who's Who in the Southeast, Who's Who in the South, Personalities of the South and Who's Who in American Art.

Her works were featured at the New York World's Fair Colorama Gallery in 1950. She was a life member of the Arts Student League, and a member of the National Association of Women Artists.
