This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Austria, Lily Spandorf became a resident of Washington DC in 1960 after living for a time in London and New York. She did numerous commissions of public and private views of the nation's capital. These paintings were often used as gifts to dignitaries including Princess Margaret of Great Britain and Chung Hee Park, President of Korea. She designed the U.S. postage stamp for Christmas, 1963.

Spandorf's preferred media were gouache, watercolors, and mixed media. She was a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and from 1963 to 1966, she had several solo exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

Note from Parker C. Agelasto, Curatorial Program Assistant, Smithsonian American Art Museum

Spandorf exhibited within the Smithsonian Institution as there are works of hers in the Smithsonian collection, but they are with the SI Folklife Center. She produced watercolors of the Folklife Festival every summer and SI obtained many of the works when Spandorf died.
