This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Excerpts from: Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph Newspaper article 3/1971

Virtually unknown during his lifetime, Soutter's work all but fell into oblivion after his death. In 1936 his nephew, the famed French architect LeCorbusier, organized an exhibition of Soutter's work in Connecticut. But it was not until 1961 when Ernest Manganel, Curator of the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne, organized a large retrospective exhibition in which all the rich variety of Soutter's work could be seen, that he was recognized as one of the most exciting discoveries in the art of the first half of the 20th century.

Born in 1871 in Morges (Switzerland), Soutter showed talent for both music and drawing in childhood. It was while studying the violin in Brussels that he met Miss Madge Forstman of Colorado Springs. They were married and came to Colorado Springs in 1896.

Soutter and Artus Van Briggle, founder of Van Briggle pottery, established the art department at Colorado College and Soutter served as its first chairman. He taught both music and drawing here until 1904 when he divorced and returned to Lausanne.......Following his return to Switzerland, Soutter contracted Typhus, a disease which affected him deeply, both physically and spiritually. His family placed him in an institution in 1923 where he remained until his death in 1942. Most of Soutter's work dates from the period of his confinement and, in many ways, reflect the long, lonely passion which was his life.
