Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Louis Sylvia was a marine painter who studied at the Swain School of Design, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League. Special teachers were Harry Neyland and Aldro Hibbard.

From 1957 to 1965, he was a high school art instructor at New Bedford. His work has been featured in Yachting Magazine.
