An academic painter of Arcadian and Classical themes, Lydia Amanda Brewster Sewell studied in New York City with William Merritt Chase and William Sartain at the Art Students League. She also studied in Paris, France with William Bouguereau, Charles Emile Carolus-Duran and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Academie Julian. Sewell's career was based in New York City, where she was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1903.

Born in Essex County, New York in North Elba in 1859, Sewell exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1888 and 1903; and many of the expositions of the day, including the Columbian, Chicago, Illinois, in 1893, where she won a medal; Pan-American, Buffalo, New York, 1901; Charleston, in South Carolina, 1902; and the St. Louis, in Missouri, 1904.

Lydia Sewell died in 1926. Her obituary appeared in1929 in volume 26 of the American Art Annual of the American Federation of Arts.
