Maude Whitney Schumacher (1892-1972)

Born on May 28, 1892 in Iowa, she developed a passion for painting early on, winning prices for her watercolors at the age of 12.   As an adult, she worked as a professional photographer in Illinois, Wisconsin and Florida.  She married Charles J. Schumacher in Wisconsin and when they moved to California with their young son, Schumacher found herself in the position of being able to pursue her painting.

Jean Mannheim inspired her work and she studied with Alfred Mitchell.  Her experience in photography becomes evident in the use of light and shade in her paintings.  Many of her works depict the Western Ocean and views of the shoreline from her home in San Diego.

She signed her work M. Schumacher.

Maude Whiteney Schumacher died in San Diego on February 2, 1972.
