| | Born in Iowa on June 22, 1894. Following service in WWI, Shappell settled in Los Angeles in 1918. After graduating from the California Institute of Technology in 1933, he worked briefly as a physicist. He studied sculpture with Julia B. Wendt for several years during the 1930s and was a pupil of Emil Kosa in his watercolor classes at Otis Art Institute. He did not follow an art career and was mostly unemployed during his lifetime.
