The following is from the Boston Art Club:

Marie Haughton Spaeth was born in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1870.  Her minister father was transfered to Bryn Mawr.  In 1889 she began her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy and at the Philadelphia School of Art and Design.  In 1890 she went to Shinnecook to study with W.M. Chase.  In 1891 she was back at the PSAD for a season and then off to Europe from 1892-94 for independent studies.  From 1896-98 she returned to the PAFA and then back to Europe again from 1898-99.  This completed a full decade of studies during her twenties.

She married John Duncan Spaeth, a professor at Princeton, and was based there until her husband became the president of the University of Kansas City beginning in 1936. She was given a summer home in New Hampshire by her parents. She spent many months there painting each year with her four children. There was a large community where she lived called The Pennsylvania Colony Settlement that was so large that it spanned three towns in southwest New Hampshire, where artists, writers and actors from the Philadelphia area lived in old farms.  It was just a few miles from the Cornish-Dublin colony.  There was a great sharing of ideas and community between the two.

Spaeth exhibited at the PAFA, the NAD, the Society of Independent Artists, the Pan Pac Expo, the Corcoran, the Lorillard Art Club, the Plastics Club, Portland Maine, American Federation of Artists, etc.  She painted throughout the entire US and Western Europe.
