| Martin V. Shaff was born on a farm in Michigan on Aug. 28, 1865. By 1900 Shaff had moved to Los Angeles and established a photography studio. He later worked as a carpenter while painting in his leisure. He was one of the earliest members of the Eagle Rock art colony. He died in Placer County, CA on Dec. 12, 1942.
