Max Theodore Streckenbach (1863-1936)

Max Theodore Streckenbach was born in Eckernförde, Germany on May 18, 1863 to Udo Streckenbach and Marie Wiebke.  Streckenbach was the son of a pharmacist and, as such, was sent to study medicine after finishing high school at Schleswig Catholic School (1876-1885).

He studied medicine in Munich, Berlin, Rostock, Kiel and Bern, Switzerland before returning to his home town of Eckernförde.

At the age of 37, in 1900, he appears in his home town records as a flower painter.  His paintings focused on poppies, roses, tulips, and poinsettias.  Some paintings of fruit and an occasional landscape are recorded.  It is not known where he studied or if he learned while abroad from other artist or attended schools popular at the time like Munich but, based on his landscapes, it is more likely that he might have learned in Bern, Switzerland.

He was a popular artist within his own time in his native country of Germany and even produced a series of lithographic prints from his work.  According to the Eckernförde Museum in Germany, which set up an archive of his work and held a retrospective of his work in 2006, there are many forgeries and misattributions of his work.
