| | Born in England on March 1, 1883. Southby studied under Thos Mackay at the Royal Academy in London, and, after immigrating the U.S., at Hartford School of Fine Arts and Graphic Sketch Club of Philadelphia. He was the pastor of a Protestant church for many years until throat problems forced him to open an art gallery in Los Angeles in 1920.
