| | Born in Sacramento, CA on Feb. 15, 1917. Mercedes settled in Oakland with her family in 1926. By nine she was winning awards for her artwork and at 13 began studying at the CCAC. In 1942 she wed Douglas Smith. In 1955 she began a 23-year stint teaching painting and drawing at the San Leandro School District. She died in Emeryville, CA on March 18, 1998. Her work includes landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and abstracts. Member: Oakland AA; SF Women Artists; Marin Society of Artists. Exh: Alameda Co.
