This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Nina Alice Banning was born in Wales - parents were William Fleetwood Banning and Charlotte (nee Lloyd).
Christopher Elson and Nina were married in October 1896 at St Mary's church, Hitchin, Hertfordshire. In the 1901 census they are at Shedfield, Hampshire.

In the 1911 census Christopher Elson has been 'married' to Nellie Jane Allcroft for six years, and they have three daughters, Ethel, Nellie and Marjorie. They live in Surrey.

In the 1911 census Nina Alice has been 'married' to George Samways, a Hastings man, for seven years. They are living in St Leonards-on-Sea and are stewards at the golf club.

After 1911 I couldn't find Nina again in U.K. and wondered if she had emigrated. After much searching I found her in California using the name Nina Alice Banning Samways, having arrived there in 1929. She was a well-regarded artist and active in the local Art Society, living at Laguna Beach.

I don't know if George Samways was with her, but later Nina appears in the Naturalisation Indexes of the Court District of California 4th March 1935 as Nina Alice Elson Samways. At that time she was living at Oakland, Alameda, California.

It seems she used her previous marriage certificate as some proof of identity. I believe Nina and Christopher Elson were never divorced which is why Nellie and Christopher Elson could not marry.

Nina Alice Banning Elson Samways died at Elsinore, California of influenza in 1961.

Written and submitted by Elizabeth Elson, whose grandfather was married to Nina Alice Banning.
