| Oscar Daniel Soellner was born April 8, 1890, in Chicago. He was
one of the seven children of William and Barbara Soellner, immigrants
from Munich. William, a descendant from a long line of wood
carvers who produced finely carved columns and fretwork for private and
public buildings in the area. Oscar was primarily self-taught in
art, having studied art books he found in the library. He took
some classes at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art*. His first
