Artist name: Pamela Hunt Shoemaker Born October 13, 1944 at Reading, Pennsylvania, USA Studio address: 373 Broadway, C1, New York, New York, USA Primary subject matter: Nudes; earlier work narrative and political Style: Figurative Media: Oil paintings and mixed-media works on paper
Biography: Pamela Shoemaker is a figurative painter whose most recent works (2001) are a series of nudes, though her earlier work has been primarily narrative and concerned with historical, political, and sometimes psychological themes.
Raised outside Philadelphia in Haddonfield, New Jersey, she was encouraged to draw and paint by her mother who had graduated from the Philadelphia Museum School of Art (now University of the Arts). Her skill in art was also supported by her early grammar-school teachers and still later, when she edited the artwork for her high-school yearbook. However, when informed by her parents that in order to attend art school she would be required to live at home, she chose to study at Vassar College instead, where she majored in history of art.
Upon graduation in 1966 she moved to New York City, and three years later entered Cooper Union. There she earned a Diploma in Painting and Drawing (1969-73), having studied under Nicholas Marsicano and Paul Resika.
Most active in the 1980s, she produced a number of public art projects, including a large mural (1986) in Queens, Tango U.S.A., which became much beloved by the many Latino residents of the neighborhood. In the early 1990s, fascinated by medieval art and the simultaneously "medieval" quality of crime-ridden New York, she enrolled at Fordham University and received a masters degree in Medieval Studies, specializing in art and theology. At this time, having experienced some personal misfortunes, she painted a series of bitter and ironic works in egg-tempera on parchment, influenced by medieval Italian "miracle" paintings, though her narratives showed the opposite of miracles: a sample title is The Virgin Mother Had Stopped for Espresso as Billy Was Caught in the Crossfire. Works made at the turn of the 20th century were inspired by Mary Shoemaker, her eccentric aunt whom Alice Neel painted in 1965 wearing an orange hat with a garland of grapes. When Mary died in 1998, her many flamboyant hats passed to Pamela. She painted the series of nudes, wearing the hats, as a memento.
To the present she remains living and working in New York City.
