Paul Sires currently works full-time as a sculptor in his private studio. He is the former director of Clayworks at Spirit Square in Charlotte, North Carolina and received his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and his BFA from Kent State University.
Sires has exhibited his work at a number of museums including the Mint Museum, Charlotte; the University of New Mexico Art Museum; the Birmingham Museum of Art; the Columbus Museum of Art; the Butler Institute of American Art; the Cleveland Museum of Art; and the Pallazzo Venezia in Rome, Italy.
He is the recipient of several fellowships including the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the North Carolina Visual Artist Fellowship, and the Ohio Individual Artist Fellowship. Sires has completed over a dozen public art commissions, and his work is included in numerous private collections in the U.S. and abroad.
The work of Paul Sires ranges from low relief wall drawings in castable material to large-scale architectural sculptures in stone, ceramic, and concrete. His freestanding sculptures are characterized by varied surfaces, textures, and forms. The surfaces of these works are incised, cut, and glazed.
According to Sires, "To understand the complexities of our world, I reduce ideas to simple situations or forms. I am amazed that certain objects carefully placed in a measured space can create an immeasurable psychological space. I enjoy the elegant poetry of the interplay of form and materials. Natural materials such as clay and stone are as old as the beginning. These materials help reaffirm our existence in this natural world, albeit a blink in geologic time. As we walk on this planet, we have emerged from it and learned how to use and shape it. I grapple to understand how experiences of my measured everyday existence may effect the compositions of the psychological spaces I hope to create."
