A landscape and figure painter who depicted many Southwest subjects and
also a muralist, Philip Sawyer was born in Chicago and studied at the
Art Institute of Chicago, at Purdue University, and the Yale School of
Fine Arts. In Paris, he studied with Leon Bonnat, and after 1900 lived
much of the time in France.
He was active in Detroit, Michigan
as a member of the Society of Independent Artists. He completed a mural
titled "Scenes from Chicago History (1915), which is in the restore (showing 500 of 1496 characters). |
