Rahmat Subani Irfani was born in Sukoarjo Solo, Central Java on February 11, 1949. He inherited his drawing talent from his father, who though he became a Religious Teacher, was best known as a drawing expert. Rahmat Subani decided to continue his College education in ASRI Jogjakarta. Of course with his drawing skills which had been sharpened since he was small, he easily passed the entrance test. He really enjoyed study and was active in several campus organisations. He also really liked to read and study a variety of subjects, including marketing, advertising, philosophy and social communication.
In 6 years of his career Rahmat Subani had 33 exhibitions, including 3 solos. Among them were the Exhibition at Edwin Gallery, Exhibition at Santi Gallery, Exhibition in Japan Art, Exhibition at the CP Foundation, The Phenomenon of five sides Exhibition (5 times), the ASRI Exhibition, etc.
Visually he had 3 stages through his career: "out of the frame," "the movement" and "metamorphosis." In the "out of the frame" period, his works had visual effects to attract the attention of the viewer in like the object that looks like it is out of a frame, the world of the illusion and the difference of the real world and the unreal. In the "movement period," the movement of the object provided the narration he wanted to share. Afterwards in the "Metamorposis" period, subjects of humankind were explored to represent his philosophy. The dominant black color was not only color but also the theme. (Edwin Rahardjo)
This can be seen in the paintings Gejolak Jiwa (1995), Climax (1996), Di Balik Kegelapan (1996) and Lively Night (1996) where black controls the canvas and leaves approximately twenty percent of the canvas for the game of the illusion. (Jim Supangkat 01 0)
During his last period of the career, Rahmat Subani depicted the female nude in various styles and themes in the middle of dominant black, creating a mysterious attraction and at the same time giving the impression of softness, calm and cheerfulness.
Rahmat Subani died in 2003.
