The following, submitted September 2004, is from Leo Pando, author of the article 'Sam Savitt' published in "Illustration Magazine", August 2002. Pando knew Savitt personally and stays in touch with his wife, Bette Orkin.
Sam Savitt got his first assignment for Dell Comics from Western Printing in 1951 where a line of comics for Gene Autry's horse Champion had already been started. With two issues out, Dell hired Sam to do the cover for Champion number three. He would go on to paint (showing 500 of 7800 characters). |
