Serai Sherman, painter, sculptor, ceramist and printmaker, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1922. She has won many prizes, medals and awards in the United States and abroad. They include, in 1945, the Pepsi Cola; in 1952-1954, a Fulbright fellowship to Italy; 1964, an award in painting, and 1970, the Childe Hassam Prize, both from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, New York City; 1976, the Proctor Prize from the National Academy of Design, New York City; and a variety of awards in Italy. She was elected an Academician of the National Academy of Design in 1999.

Among Sherman's one-person exhibitions are the ACA Gallery, New York City, in 1951, 1955, 1958 and 1960; Galleria La Nuova Pesa, Rome, Italy, 1961; Galleria Viotti, Turin, Italy, 1963; Forum Gallery, New York City, 1963, 1967, 1970, 1974, 1986; Fairweather-Hardin Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, 1964; Museum of Contemporary Art, Skopje, Yugoslavia, 1965; Salon Tribune-Mladih, Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, 1966; Galerie Weltz, Salzburg, Austria, 1966; Galleria dell'Orso, Milan, Italy, 1973; Studio 5, Bologna, Italy, 1976; Madison Gallery Gallery, Toronto, Canada, 1979; and Galleria Giulia, Rome, Italy, 1982.

Sherman has had group exhibitions in locations as widespread as Bratislava, Czechoslovakia; Palermo, Sicily; Acireale, Italy; and Haifa, Israel; as well as throughout the United States.

Sherman received both Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in education from the Tyler School of Fine Arts, Temple University, in Philadelphia. Her M.A. degree in painting and art history came from the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

Sherman worked on paintings and sculpture for a centuries-old family chapel in Cortona, Italy between 1987 and 1992.

Writings about Serai Sherman include "Forty Artists Under Forty from the Collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art", by Lloyd Goodrich and Edward Bryant for Praeger, published in 1962; "Serai Sherman, A Retrospective: 1945-1982", with essays by Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti and Mario Penelope, published in 1983 in Nuovedizioni Enrico Vallechi; a 1986 Forum Gallery, New York City, catalog, "Serai Sherman"; and one from the Madison Gallery, Toronto, Canada, "Serai Sherman: Ceramic Sculpture", also in 1986.
