This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following, at the suggestion of John Winski, is excerpted from the writing of Richard Threlkeld Cox, husband of the artist and former Chairman of the Physics Department at Johns Hopkins University. It was written for The Project on the History of Recent Physics in the United States of the American Institute of Physics, The Archives of The Johns Hopkins University, and for publication in part in Adventures in Experimental Physics 1975.

During the next few years, my life, personal and professional, was changing rapidly. In 1926 I married Shelby Shackelford, then beginning a career as artist, teacher and writer [6].

In 1927, Dr. Hubbard left New York University to become professor of physics at Johns Hopkins [7]. Then an assistant professor, I was made chairman of the department.

[6] We were married in St. George's Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where, during most of her childhood, she and her widowed mother had shared the home of one of her father's cousins. Her mother, from Nashville, Tennessee, was Anna Williams Fassmann until her marriage to Reverend J. Green Shackelford, who was rector of an Episcopal church and head of a school in Halifax, Virginia, when Shelby was born.

She and I met in Baltimore, where she had come to study at the Maryland Institute. Later she studied painting in this country with Marguerite Zorach and in France with Othon Friesz and Fernand Leger (having become fluent in French at school in Switzerland when she was twelve years old).

Her works are in many collections, among them the New York Library, the Baltimore Museum of Art and St. Timothy's School, Baltimore. She has taught painting at the Baltimore Museum, St. Timothy's and elsewhere. Her prints have won three awards in exhibitions of "Fifty Best Prints of the Year."

So much exacting work has never kept her from being a most loyal wife, and a devoted mother to our son Douglas Cox, now in California, and our daughter Aylette Cox Jenness, in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and she still finds time to be a continually attentive grandmother to our grandson Kirik Jenness and our granddaughters, Evan Aylette Jenness and Anna Felicity Elizabeth Cox.
