This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Sol Schwartz was born May 3, 1899 in Newark, NJ.  Soon after, his family moved to Brooklyn, New York where he lived the rest of his life.

Schwartz started drawing at an early age and after serving briefly in World War 1 as a camouflage artist, he began his formal art studies at the Pratt Institute and at the Art Students League with Raphael Soyer, Georgia O'Keefe, and others.  He was a teacher of art in the New York schools for 37 years, continuing all the time his own works in various media - oils, pastels, drawings, and etchings.  A world traveler, his subject matter included abstracts, landscapes, figure studies, flowers and animals.

His last major project was a group of 40 portraits he called  "People of Achievement", men and women who shaped the twentieth centure by their statesmanship, talent, and work for humanity.  Included are such personalities as Helen Keller, Dr. Albert Einstein, Sir Winston Churchill and Marian Anderson.

Sol Schwartz died suddenly, January 13, 1960, on his way to California where he had planned to retire.
