Biography from AskART:
| Stephen Shaheen is from Rumson, New Jersey. He is the creator of the Memoria Project, a tribute to all who lost their lives in the World Trade Center in New York, on 9/11/2001.
He became determined to do the commemorative project for installation at Sandy Hook National Park, and he and friends raised $150,000 for the endeavor. They succeeded in getting quarries in Vermont and Virginia to donate the stone and got the assistance of two Tuscan stone carvers who worked for a small stipend. Many local people volunteered to help with the massive stone sculpture,
overseen by Shaheen who also gave public lectures explaining the
project.
Due to federal restrictions, the Memoria Project could not be installed at Sandy Hook, and is located in Veterans Memorial Park on the Shrewsbury River in Highlands, New Jersey, across from Sandy Hook.
