Biography from Stephen M. Foster Fine Arts:
Theodore Shorey Slafter (American 1854-194?)

Theodore S. Slafter was born in Dedham, Massachusetts of a distinguished New England family.  His father, Carlos, an ordained minister, was the master of Dedham High School for forty years.  At the age of thirteen, Slafter's meticulous and carefully rendered drawings of notable Slafter family homesteads accompanied the 1869 memorial publication of the descendants of John Slafter, a Norwich, Vermont deacon.

After graduating from Dedham High School, Slafter attended Dartmouth College, as did his father before him, graduating in 1875.  He later studied art at the Royal Academy in Munich.  During his adult years as an active artist, Slafter exhibited at the Boston Art Club, of which he was a member, from 1888 to 1901 and at the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1890's.  He was also a member of the Copley Society.  A February 15, 1943 Boston Post photo portrays a distinguished looking 89-year old Slafter, described as a "retired painter" and one of three living members of the Dartmouth class of 1875, receiving the Boston Post cane, apparently for being being the oldest living resident of Walpole, Mass.

Sources include:
Dedham Historical Society; Boston Art Club Exhibition Record, History of Dedham (Smith, Frank); Memorial of John Slafter by Rev. Edmund F. Slafter (Boston, Henry Dutton & Son, 1869); Boston Post, February 15, 1943.
