Thomas Albert Sills, an African American and the youngest of eleven
children, was born on August 20, 1914 on a farm in Castalia, North
Carolina. During his childhood, Sills moved around several times
attending school intermittently but never finishing his education.
When he was nine years old, he started working at a greenhouse / flower
shop in Raleigh, North Carolina. Here marks an important
