Biography from The Mariners' Museum:
Thomas Skinner (1889-1955)

"His (Skinners) studio did not possess the conventional quiet decorum.  Riveting hammers provided a continuous tattoo.  And his floor shook with the vibration of heavy machinery. But he learned in a matter of moments to set up his easel and start sketching a damaged tanker being warped into a dry dock.  The result has been unposed paintings that are bold, colorful and almost noisily true to life." Shirley Brown Richmond Times Dispatch 1948.

Thomas Skinner, one of America’s premier maritime artists was born in 1889 in Kutawa, Kentucky.  At an early age he began painting the surrounding mountain scenery.  This early interest in art led to Skinners life long passion of becoming an artist.

Later Skinner studied at the Art Students League, which by the 1900s had established itself as an important art school, and at the National Academy of Design in New York City.  Two years after the Mariners’ Museum was founded in 1930, Thomas Skinner was appointed as its staff artist.  Recognized by Homer L. Ferguson for his artistic ability, he was given a studio in the heart of one of the nation’s bustling shipyards at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock.
