Biography from Fred R. Kline Gallery, Inc.:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Thomas Stewart (British, 1766-1801) was most noted as a painter of the London theatrical scene during the 1790s. His portraits of actors and dramatic scenes were highly praised at the time but are rare and little recognized today.

One of his most notable works is the recently discovered, Portrait of Chavalier D'Eon (with Philip Mould & Company, London), depicting one of the legendary characters of the period: D'Eon, a brilliant eccentric was famous (or infamous) as a public transvestite who dressed publicly as a woman and was known as the "Patron Saint of Transvestites"; D'Eon's further notoriety included periods as a spy and diplomat and master fencer who acted on stage as a fencer in drag.

Thomas Stewart died at age 35 leaving behind a likely body of works that remain for the most part un-located.
