Biography from Bradford Trust Fine Arts:
Vernon Smith was born in 1894 in Cortland, NY (upper state) and, by 1918, he had gone to study at the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts in Paris.  Smith also came to Cape Cod where he studied with Charles Hawthorne, the founder of the Provincetown School of Art, eventually settling in the town of Orleans where he became a teacher in the Orleans public school system.

During the Depression years of 1934-1937, he was Regional Director of the WPA and painted in Alaska that last year when his work took him there.  He apparently established ties with the Boston area quite early because he exhibited at the Walker Gallery, Boston with a one-man show in 1934 and at the Institute of Modern Art, Boston, in 1939.

He was a founder and President of the Cape Cod Art Association and a member of the Provincetown Art Association and Eastern Art Association, among others.

Throughout his life, Smith participated in many, many exhibitions in a wide range of places including the Kraushaar Gallery, NYC from 1944-1965 with a solo exhibition there in 1947; the Virginia Museum of Fine Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, both in 1946, the Henderson Gallery, Carmel, CA from 1960-66, starting with a solo exhibition and at many places on Cape Cod.

Smith is known for his abstract figurative painting and bas-relief wood carvings which became his principal artistic form from about 1946 on.  It is believed that much of this work was done during a serious, extended illness of his wife’s as he could sit at her bedside and carve when he couldn’t be at an easel painting.

The works of Vernon Smith can be found at the Boston Museum of Fine Art, Museum of Modern Art, NYC, New Britain Museum, Dartmouth College Museum, Anchorage Museum, Cape Museum of Fine Arts and the Provincetown Art Association, in addition to other places.
